DOUG GILLARD - Salamander (Pink Frost)

Adding to the myriad Guided By Voices-related releases (Bob Pollard sure loves his four-track), Salamander marks the first solo effort for GBV riffmaster Doug Gillard. Also the debut disc released by Jack Rabid¹s Pink Frost Records, Salamander showcases a highly dynamic array of songs, ranging from the gorgeous pop of "Vallpolicella," and the amazing acoustic psych-rock of "Blockout," to the gritty "Fate, Say it Again." The comparisons to recent Guided By Voices efforts are indeed inevitable, but a couple of listens to Salamander will make it absolutely clear to the listener that Gillard has proffered a top-notch pop record on the eve of GBV¹s December 31, 2004 farewell.
